There are those who recall a scouting program at FUMC before the Depression. By the time anyone cared to take note of such things, however those who would know had either forgotten or passed on to their great reward. An unfortunate fire in Nashville wiped away any records before the late 1930’s. What we do know is that FUMC has had a continuous sponsorship of Troop 114 since 1941.
Sponsorship might seem too mild of a term. FUMC’s involvement in both Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts has been quite profound. FUMC has provided leadership on the local, regional, and state levels. Alumni from Troop 114 have gone on to do great things. In 2007, the troop celebrated its 100th Eagle Scout (Will Matlock who is currently at West Point). And in 2008, the troop was awarded The Bishop’s Award of Excellence by the United Methodist Church. In 2009, the church was awarded the Shepherd Church designation.
FUMC’s formal involvement with Cub Scouting began in 1990 with the sponsorship of Pack 369 from Joseph Brown Elementary School. In 1999, FUMC also began sponsoring Pack 105 from Highland and McDowell Elementary Schools.
Girl Scouts use the facility for a variety of training sessions and troop meetings.
A Venture Crew is under development. The Crew has been assigned the number 006.
American Heritage Girls is a new religious organization for girls and is under development. AHG has assigned FUMC the troop number Tennessee #001.
